1920 The sale of alcoholic beverages became illegal in America when the 18th Amendment to the Constitution took effect. Prohibition was repealed in 1933 by the 21st Amendment.

1938 Benny Goodman played a famous jazz concert at Carnegie Hall, after first refusing because black members of his band were barred from performing. Goodman eventually went on when Carnegie Hall relented and let all the performers play.
